HHS taps new Director to lead BARDA Division of Research, Innovation, and Ventures (DRIVe)

Sandeep Patel, armed with experience supporting HHS in solving high impact health problems like kidney failure and disease prevention using innovative and collaborative funding and policy-making approaches, takes on a new role as Director of BARDA Division of Research, Innovation, and Ventures (DRIVe).

Sandeep’s experience includes supporting efforts involving a $30M+ public-private partnership KidneyX to spur development of an artificial kidney and standing up the largest public-facing open innovation program in the U.S. government, with 190+ competitions and $45M in awards since 2011.

Prior roles include:

  • Open Innovation Manager | KidneyX Founder and Director – U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
  • Co-founder – OmusonoLabs
  • Sr. Scientific Analyst – Discovery Logic, a Thomson Reuters Company
