MedPage Today: CMS Takes Concrete Step to Realize EHR Interoperability

“Development of truly interoperable electronic health record (EHR) systems can now draw on a “data element library” established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the agency announced Thursday.”

“It’s intended to be a “one-stop shop” that combines standards CMS had previously set for interoperable EHRs with examples of particular data types, such questions and response items about patients covering demographics, diagnoses, and evaluations…”

“Initially, the data elements pertain to post-acute care settings, such as skilled nursing facilities, hospices, and home health agencies. In the future, CMS anticipates expanding the library “to include other CMS assessment content, such as…” Read the full article here.
