VA issues RFI for Audit of Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS) Application

VA has issued an RFI for its Office of Pharmacy Benefits Management Services (PBM) who is seeking a contract for independent third-party certification of the system used for electronic prescribing of controlled substances (i.e., CPRS and its associated VistA Pharmacy and Kernel patches) and the system used for pharmacy fulfillment of electronically transmitted controlled substance prescriptions (i.e., the VistA Pharmacy package).

The goal of this contract is to purchase certification services to address the ongoing routine maintenance of VistA software used in in the prescription and dispensing of controlled substance medications, obtain certification for variants in the software when compared to the original national certification, and perform user environment assessments in accordance with DEA’s expectations for the certifying organization to ensure processing integrity at all states of the electronic prescription process.  PBM seeks to obtain certification for additional user environment configurations not tested during the initial certification process.
