HHS ONC to Award $2 Million in Funding to Promote Interoperability

“For the third year in a row, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is notifying private health IT organizations about a funding opportunity that will award a total of $2 million to enhance interoperability.”

“The Leading Edge Acceleration Projects (LEAP) in Health Information Technology aims to address the development and testing of data exchange to support clinical care, research, and improved healthcare outcomes.”

“Specifically, the 2020 funding opportunity will be awarded to organizations that are:

  • Enhancing the registry infrastructure for an API-based health IT system
  • Developing health IT tools for scaling research
  • Integrating healthcare and human services data for improved healthcare outcomes”

“As the appointed federal organization to implement and utilize health IT, it is the ONC’s job to support and adopt health IT projects to promote interoperability and a nationwide health information exchange (HIE).”

“The overall goal of LEAP in Health IT is for ONC to address current challenges that are combatting the development, use, and advancement of health IT across the industry…”

“The importance and need for interoperability has been put under the microscope during the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to health technology experts who wrote a recent post for the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy…” Read the full article here.
