POLITICO: But her emails? CMS’ Seema Verma Stripped of Oversight after Outage

“… An unusual episode last month complicated HHS’ response to coronavirus, led to CMS losing control of its own emails and exacerbated tensions in a department already straining to fight the outbreak, POLITICO’s Dan Diamond scooped.”

“HHS officials were frustrated when their email crashed for hours on Feb. 23, just as they tried to hammer out a coronavirus emergency funding response package. The culprit: CMS, which had run a major test on the email system the same day, without alerting HHS.”

“By the following week, the health department’s chief information officer had begun an audit of CMS’ information technology operations, citing a series of data problems and cybersecurity risks. Meanwhile, HHS Deputy Secretary Eric Hargan informed Verma that CMS no longer had control over its own email strategy.”
