Forbes: CMS Administrator says patient empowerment is key – CMS evaluating value-based models

“Seema Verma, a former healthcare industry consultant tapped by Donald Trump to run CMS said patients need more information to choose the best physicians. They also need incentives so they aren’t just choosing a provider because it’s paid for by the government.”

“Patient empowerment could come in the form of patients covered by Medicaid contributing to their costs in the form of premiums, co-payments or other out-of-pocket costs …”

“In addition, Verma said CMS will be evaluating value-based models that move Medicare and the U.S. healthcare system in general away from fee-for-service medicine to alternative payments. She cited accountable care organizations…”
